Fold mountains are mountains which are present along certain plate boundaries where two tectonic plates are moving towards each other, and take millions of years to form. They occur when there are huge depressions between plate boundaries called geosynclines. These gaps contain the seas and oceans and as these sources of water flow in to the depression they deposite sediment. The sediment could be mud and sand which has been eroded from rock or river banks. The sediment is then deposited along the bottom of the geosynclines in various layers. This process takes a long time to happen and can take many years. As sea animals die they remains could fall to the bottom of the sea and be coverred by more layers of sediment. Over time the sediment is compressed into very hard rock. For example the sand turned into sandstone and shells into limestone. The sediment changed into rocks because of the pressure from the sedimnet above and within these rocks there may be fossils. These rocks which are sedimentary are forced in a upwards direction into a series of folds as the two tectonic plates move closer towards one and other. When the two plates move together this creates a compressional margin. When the sediment is foreced upwards this creates up folds which are called anticlines and down folds which are synclines. So fossils can be found in mountaions because they can be present in the sediment which forms them.

How can Fossils be found in Fold Mountions?
