Two search requests on the internet website Google produce “as much carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle”, according to a Harvard University academic.
This report on the BBC News website investigates the idea that for every Google search performed on a desktop computer, about 7g of CO2 is produced. Google however, debates this figure and states that the true figure is 0.2g. The production of CO2 is predominantly through use of electricity by a computer, plus the energy needed to run Google’s large data centres.
